What is Baleadas?
Baleadas is one of the very simple dishes; it has refried Red beans, honduras cream, and crumbled cheese wrapped in a tortilla. Tortilla is a thick bread made of flour.

This is the simplest and most Authentic version, but some restaurants start adding other ingredients, like eggs and meat, according to the taste of tourists.

History of Baleadas
So there are many stories associated with baleadas History. But I will tell you about the most famous and logical one.
The meaning of baleadas is “Shot”. So most of people seem to agree it came into existence from the north coast of Honduras.
There was a very famous vendor lady who served this delicious dish with beans and cheese. Who got shot, and after she recovered from that incident.
All of her customers start calling her point baleadas or some seem to say they start calling the lady who got shot. Anyway, her food point then got famous by the name of Bleadas.
Ingredients Needed to Make Baleadas
- 1 tsp of baking powder
- 2 cups of flour (for the tortillas)
- 1 tbsp of oil
- 1/2 tsp of salt
- Warm water (enough to form a dough)
- Refried beans (any type of beans, but red beans are traditional)
- Queso fresco (or a mild cheese if you can’t find it)
- Crema (Honduran sour cream, or use regular sour cream if needed)
- Optional: scrambled eggs or avocado for extra love
How to Make Baleadas( Baleadas Recipe):
- Prepare the tortillas: In a bowl, combine the flour, oil, baking powder, and salt. Add warm water slowly as you mix until the dough is soft. Place into discs after rolling into small balls, then cook each one for two minutes on each side in a hot, dry skillet.
- Get the filling ready: Spread a thick layer of your reheated beans on each tortilla. Add plenty of crema and queso fresco on top. Add some scrambled eggs or cuts of fresh avocado if you need a more comforting taste.
- Assemble and Serve: Serve the tortilla hot after cutting it in half and wrapping it. The ideal way to begin your day (or evening) is with a soft tortilla, hearty, creamy, and cheesy beans!
